The Virtual World of Business Evolves

What Steve Pruitt and Tom Barrett introduce as the Corporate Virtual Workspace may sound a bit alarming or even just strange. The fact that humans may in fact be able to interact with other people they would otherwise spend their days with via technological virtual space is indeed revolutionary. While technology exists that allow for people to experience virtual reality this technology known as the CVW could further deteriorate the time and space compression and have extremely beneficial environmental ramifications. At first read I would equate this proposition to working from home with all of the benefits of going in and interacting with co-workers. However, this technology would allow us to improve our efficiency while simultaneously avoiding the morning hassle of commuting long distances. For the average American worker that has to add a commute to an already busy day this type of innovation would be quite positive. The closest comparison of this type of technology would be what Cisco Systems provides for the modern workplace. Their TelePresence technology is similar in some ways to what Pruitt and Barrett discuss as the CVS. TelePresence allows companies that are spread across the globe to interact and even form meetings that could otherwise have never been possible. During the global recession the demand for such video conferencing technology has increased dramatically, as the time and space barrier is eroding even more. In the next few decades companies such as Cisco and others may soon make Pruitt and Barrett’s Corporate Virtual Workspace a reality.
