Is this really necessary?

I found the section on "Mobile Ad Hoc Social Networks" particularly interesting, but I was left with this overarching question of whether or not this is needed and if anyone will do it. Just because Bluetooth lets us do this I don't see why you would want to unless you are in a really boring conference somewhere and you don't want to speak with you friends verbally. They say there is a time and a place for everything, but is this technology going to hurt human interaction and communication? I think the jury is still out on this, but for the time being we need to focus on developing technologies that actually make a difference for people. Instead of worrying about BBM's, text messages, ad hoc social networks etc etc why not develop technology which allows for police officers to better monitor criminals using this technology or even a cure for cancer.
