The things that we, as humans, pride ourself in is our mind. We naturally lack defense mechanisms such as claws, running fast, or fur. We are adapted to survive by using our mind and knowledge to create and develop new ways to sustain ourselves. Because our brain is our greatest asset, we pride ourselves in being able to create things that nothing else can. Poetry, songs, technology, or theory, we view these as things that our mind can discover or create but nothing else can. In the portion of "1999" we read by Ray Kurzweil, it becomes evident that perhaps machines will soon be at that level with us.
We frequently hear about the upcoming moment when computing power will be greater than human brain power. It is a date where something will happen, although it's impossible to decide what. In "1999" we are shown that computers can already create things that we once assumed were a strictly human ability, such as poetry and art. This was done with a fraction of the computing power that is estimated computers will gain in just a few years. If computers can already create things that we, as humans, often view as our own manifestation of our brain power, then how far can computers trump us at our own game?
