After reading “Corporate Virtual Workplace,” by Steve Pruitt and Tom Barrett I thought this was one of the most interesting ideas I have hear in a long time. It seems many years away until we enter these virtual work places, but some things that we currently do are related to this article. We already use skype and facetime on our lap tops and I-phones. Although these are not virtual, these give us an opportunity to be with the people we are talking to without actually being with them. To think that this whole virtual world could exist just seems so crazy.
When the reading was describing the picture in the office that ended up being almost like the real mountain with leaves blowing and people descending reminded me of the moving pictures in the Harry Potter movies. I could not help but think that this kind of virtual technology was more a sort of magic than a reality. I think our developing technology has no ceiling, but I do not know if we will see this CVW in my lifetime.
Another thing that I saw recently that can relate to this is the virtual career fair that I participated in a few months ago. It promoted how you only physically go to a career fair to interact and hand out a resume. This virtual career fair let you do the same thing via the internet. I had to make my own profile with a picture, some facts about me, a cover letter, and a resume. You then scrolled or “walked” around to the different booths were representatives and workers were ready to talk to you. You could chat with them through type, or you were able to talk through a skype like feature. I thought it was pretty crazy and is currently probably the closest thing we have to the corporate virtual workplace.
