CVW

The article entitled “The Corporate Virtual Workspace” written by Steve Pruitt and Tom Barrett was and an enjoyable read and made a lot of interesting points. For the majority of the article, Pruitt and Barrett discuss the CVW and say how it is “a response to several forces that are visible in today’s physically based corporations: the evolution of software technology, complexity of large scale projects, and demands for higher productivity.” Pruitt and Barrett go on to say that software’s accessibility is increasing, software can solve more and bigger problems, and productivity has become a serious problem. I agree with those three statements, but I do not companies are going to make the switch from having to be physically present everyday at a specific location to a virtual workplace where all you have to do is connect your PVW to other people’s PVW as well as your employer’s. It would be a valuable economic asset because people would not have to pay as much money for gas to drive to work every day or pay for train/bus tickets to get to their workplace, but I do not think this is very realistic at the present time. It would allow people to work out of their homes and save a lot of money and time, but being physically present at work, communicating face-to-face with your employer, employees, or customers, and using nonverbal cues to transmit information are so important in today’s working world, and I do not know if a company could succeed in a virtual workspace. It may happen several years from now, but I cannot see this occurring in the near future and it would take a lot of adjustments by a lot of people to make this work.
