Remix Culture
Lawrence Lessig’s “Remix Culture” expresses the ideas of how the music culture is changing. With more ways to escape copyrights, artists are now able to release ‘new’ music based off a new song from artists such as P. Diddy. These new artists are able to change some of the lyrics or put songs together to make a new song. This book explained that today everyone has photo shop on their computer. Photo shop allows for anyone to take a photo and fix it up and add anything or anybody to the image. Gillis believes that eventually having the ability to remix music will be on everyone’s computer, just like photo shop now is. While Britney Spears is not an amateur singer/song writer, she has still been accused of ripping off the Bellamy Brother’s hit “Hold it Against Me”. Britney Spears used to have original music, but maybe now Spears is realizing it is acceptable for today’s society to remix songs of the past. The rise of amateur artists can be found by simply searching YouTube for a few minutes. There are new songs being posted daily from individuals hoping to be discovered. A recent artist that is hitting YouTube right now is Rebecca Black. While her song “Friday” is obnoxious, there has already had a lot of remixes of the song.
