In the excerpt by Daniel Miller about Facebook I thought it was interesting how facebook, like instant messaging did in the past, is changing the way we communicate with each other. Facebook makes it easy to connect and "talk" through the internet and leaving messages. It gives you time to read and think over what you are going to say before you post it. I think that the way we are connecting and making friends on this site is corrupting the way we are able to communicate in real time. When having a conversation you do not have the time to really think about what is going to come out of your mouth. Instant messaging, facebook, and now even twitter are making people become less social, even though they are social networks. I feel that by people not taking the time to pick up the phone to call a friend and have an actual conversation they are becoming less socialable.
I thought the article was interesting, but the other thing I think it could have hit on is how Facebook can be addicting. This article may give extreme examples of being addicted to it, but I think it is pretty true. Most people have a tough time getting on their computer without checking their Facebook. People sit on Facebook on their phones and often procrastinate doing homework or studying because they want to cruise around on Facebook. I think Facebook is a great invention and one of the best things around. Basically everyone in my generation has a Facebook and it is a great way to connect with people, but we must always keep in mind the consequences of a good thing.
