Facebook Taking Over The Internet

In Daniel Miller’s conclusion of Tales of Facebook, he looks at specifics of how Facebook has changed the way people live today. One aspect that I thought was the most relevant and I could relate to the most was the idea of relationships. Facebook has become a tool to facilitate as well as keep relationships with others in your life. These relationships can be anything from a brief encounter to a committed relationship with another person. Either way with the help of Facebook, as Miller points out, Facebook has given us a way to keep those relationships and even build them to become stronger. We have the power now to decide if we want to keep in touch and stay connected with someone, or in Facebook terms “delete” them from our friends list and basically forget about them.

Daniel Miller not only looks at this important aspect of Facebook in relationships with one another, he also discusses how Facebook is becoming the new Internet. Facebook has a search engine now located at the top of every page where if you want to search for something, you can actually get results not only for what you what, but also for what your friends have recently searched for as well, due to the common interest factor that Facebook plays off of. Facebook has become an alternative to what Google has to offer because it narrows down the search for you instead of coming up with millions of things that you do not want or which to skip over. However, even though this can be a good thing, this can also be a bad thing. What happens if you don’t want this? What happens if you want to be able to look at thousands even millions of other topics other than what your friends top results are? In a way I feel that Facebook as the new Internet may be a good thing, but at the same time, not everyone has or wants a Facebook. Google is a tool that people use every single day, Facebook is just another form of this for your own particular life. Facebook, unlike Google caters to the individual and really narrows things down according to what you put on your page. It will be very interesting to see how much further Facebook will evolve over the course of this next year and years to come.
