Facebook Vs. Google

Daniel Miller brings up a lot of great points about Facebook, especially when he talks about how Facebook is used to facilitate friendships. I just went to Las Vegas for spring break and every new person I met, whether they were from Australia, Argentina, LA, or Pennsylvania almost instantly said “Add me on Facebook”. The new people I’ve added weren’t very close friends at all, but Facebook is a way for me to do a little investigative work before knowing rather or not I want to further a friendship with these people.

Besides when Miller talks about relationships on Facebook, I found the most interesting topic to be “Facebook as the Internet”. I got a first hand look at just how large Facebook’s following is from my trip to Vegas, so I could definitely see Facebook taking over the internet. They just recently got approved for a new search patent so that now people can search for a something and the first results that will show up will be their friend’s top results. I think that this is a huge advantage for Facebook because now people won’t be overwhelmed with thousands of search results like they would in Google. Besides that, Facebook status’s and the “like” button on websites is another way to search that may be more useful than Google. If I were Google, I’d watch out for Facebook. They just may have what it takes to be the main portal of the internet.
